Little Rock to Open Cooling Centers for Relief from Oppressive Heat
As the heat wave settles into central Arkansas, the City of Little Rock is taking action to provide residents with a safe and comfortable space to escape the scorching temperatures. Starting immediately, several community centers will function as cooling centers, offering a refuge from the sweltering heat.
These cooling centers are a vital resource, especially for those who may not have access to air conditioning at home. The centers will not only provide a cooler environment but also essential supplies like water and hygiene items. Additionally, some centers will offer food and clothing to those in need, further highlighting their significance in the community.
Schedule and Locations of Cooling Centers
The Little Rock cooling centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Residents can find these centers at:
- East Little Rock Community Center, 2500 East 6th Street

- Southwest Community Center, 6401 Baseline Road
- Stephens Community Center, 3720 West 18th Street

In addition to these community centers, the Little Rock Compassion Center will also be opening its cooling area earlier than usual to address the extreme heat.
Importance of Community Support
The City of Little Rock is emphasizing the need for community support during this period. Residents are encouraged to check on their neighbors, especially those who are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, such as the elderly, young children, and individuals with disabilities or medical conditions. It is also crucial to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor activities during peak temperatures, and never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
The Little Rock Compassion Center is also seeking donations to support their efforts. Financial contributions will help cover the increased electricity costs, while donations of towels, water, and other supplies will directly benefit those in need.
