Little Rock Zoo Celebrates 100th Anniversary of Iconic Carousel
Step into history as the Little Rock Zoo marks a significant milestone – the 100th birthday of its captivating “Over-the-Jumps” carousel. This beloved attraction, a testament to Arkansas’s cultural heritage, is set to be feted in style.
Offering an unparalleled riding experience, the carousel’s undulating wooden platform takes riders on a unique journey. Its construction by the Spillman Engineering Corp. of North Tonawanda, New York, during the golden age of carousels (1887-1935) makes it a true American treasure.
First unveiled at the 1924 Arkansas State Fair, the Over-the-Jumps Carousel, has been captivating hearts for an entire century. Saved from auction by Little Rock resident Tom Fuzzell in 1942 and later placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991, its storied past holds immense cultural significance.
To mark this momentous occasion, the zoo is hosting a grand celebration. This enchanting after-hours event, generously sponsored by Centennial Bank, promises to be a night of magic and nostalgia. The evening will feature free carousel rides, captivating performances by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, historic exhibits, and engaging activities for all ages.
The celebration fosters a sense of community as it invites visitors to reminisce about cherished memories and forge new ones on this iconic ride. The evening’s festivities will be all the more special with the unveiling and dedication of the Carousel Centennial Plaque, honoring the tireless efforts of those who ensured its preservation.
