Little Rock Zoo’s ‘Over-the-Jumps’ Carousel turns 100

The Timeless Charm of the Over-the-Jumps Carousel: Celebrating a Century of Tradition

Little Rock Zoo is home to the Arkansas Carousel, also known as Over-the-Jumps, a stunning piece of history that has been thriving for an entire century. This unique carousel, meticulously maintaining its
1924 charm, is the last fully operational carousel of its kind in the world, showcasing its undulating track that moves up and down with the horses, creating a mesmerizing ride experience unlike any standard carousel.

Fulfilling its pledge to preserve this treasured landmark, the Little Rock Zoo has been actively involved in extensive restoration efforts. Becky Witsell, an expert restorer, carefully removed over 30 layers of paint to reveal the original colors of the horses and chariots. Today, trained apprentices continue to maintain the carousel, ensuring its historical integrity remains intact.

A Night of Enchantment: The Centennial Celebration

On September 10, 2024, the Little Rock Zoo will host an unforgettable evening event to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Over-the-Jumps Carousel. The magical evening promises to be a night of enchantment and celebration, honoring a crucial piece of Arkansas history. Sponsored generously by Centennial Bank, the event features live music performances, free carousel rides, historic exhibits, and an assortment of food and refreshments to savor.

Preserving Arkansas Heritage

Efforts to preserve this historic treasure continue. The carnival requires regular upkeep and maintenance to keep its beauty intact. To support this cause, visitors can make a donation to the Arkansas Zoological Foundation towards the Over-the-Jumps Carousel or celebrate special occasions with memorials such as a brick, bench, or tree.
