Enhancing Little Rock’s Safety and Sustainability
Little Rock city officials are actively addressing pressing issues related to pedestrian and bike infrastructure. The city’s Master Pedestrian Plan aims to create a more pedestrian-friendly environment, acknowledging the concerning number of pedestrian fatality rates that rank the Little Rock metro area as the 14th most dangerous in the United States.
Understanding the Context of Pedestrian and Bike Safety
Data gathered from BikePed counts and studies have shown that car vs. bike and car vs. pedestrian collisions are significantly higher in Little Rock compared to other Silver-certified cities. These statistics are particularly concerning given the higher vulnerability of pedestrians and bicyclists in accidents due to their lack of protection compared to motor vehicles. Furthermore, city officials are aware that the current design of streets often does not account for the diverse needs of all users. Designing streets solely for cars can lead to inequitable safety outcomes, disproportionately affecting certain demographics.
Implementing Innovative Solutions
To tackle these safety concerns, Little Rock is exploring innovative methods to enhance pedestrian and bike infrastructure, such as utilizing two-way cycle tracks. These physically separated bike lanes can improve safety and also increase bicycle flow. Studies have shown that these types of cycle tracks can lower injury rates by as much as 28% and attract more bicyclists compared to traditional streets.
A Broader Approach to Sustainability
In addition to improving infrastructure, the city is also launching a litter campaign in September to address environmental and aesthetic issues. This multi-faceted approach underscores the city’s commitment to fostering a more sustainable and livable environment for all residents.
