OPINION | THEATER REVIEW: Arkansas Repertory Theatre’s ‘Responders’ tickles, then shocks

“Responders” Delivers

Joseph Scott Ford’s “Responders,” a dark comedy about trying to do the right thing, has its shared world premiere at both TheatreSquared and the Arkansas Repertory Theatre. This twisted tale follows two small-town paramedics who are the first to arrive at a disturbing scene where there is little to do but wait. Unbeknownst to them, a swarm of school buses loaded with children are about to pass by, turning the incident into a chaotic comedy of errors.

The Show’s Intricate Themes

While “Responders” maintains a lighthearted atmosphere, its themes delve into the harsh realities of mental health, the challenges faced by veterans reintegrating into society after combat, and the much-needed support for those struggling. Ford’s own experiences and deep connection to the South serve as the backdrop for this thought-provoking play.
