Panel Delays Recommendation on New Home for Arkansas Public Employees Retirement System

A state-appointed panel tasked with selecting a new location for the Arkansas Public Employees Retirement System (APERS) recently postponed its decision, leaving uncertain the future home of the retirement fund.

Following months of deliberation and site visits, the APERS Relocation Committee had been poised to make a recommendation, but instead decided to prolong the process, citing the need for further evaluation.

The eventual move is necessitated by the planned razing of the current APERS headquarters to make way for a new State Police headquarters.

Among the sites under consideration are a recently vacated state office building and several privately-owned properties in the downtown area.

The committee has not set a new timeline for its recommendation, fueling speculation about the potential impact of the delay on the overall relocation process and the future operations of APERS.

APERS serves over 100,000 active and retired public employees across the state and manages a multibillion-dollar portfolio.

  • Barring unforeseen setbacks, APERS aims to complete the transition by the end of 2025.
  • The state government has budgeted million for the relocation costs.
