Pulaski County Schools Launch Innovative Workforce Prep Programs
Pulaski County Schools are taking bold steps to prepare their students for the workforce by partnering with local companies to launch a range of innovative programs. These initiatives focus on providing students with the skills and practical experience they need to succeed in today’s competitive job market.
Career Readiness and Workforce Development
One such program is the Emerging Champions Pathway to Success Career Readiness Program. This program offers youth ages 16-21 the opportunity to gain paid work experience, develop soft skills, and engage in career exploration activities. Participants are paid an hour for up to 29 hours weekly and are set up with local businesses as part-time employees. The program includes resume writing workshops, job shadowing opportunities, and cultural enrichment activities.
ACT Prep and More
The ACT Prep Program is another key initiative designed to help students improve their ACT scores. This program provides full-length practice exams and training in all four ACT subject areas. Student participants have seen an average increase of one to three points in their ACT scores. Additionally, the Little Scholars programs offer academic enhancement, cultural enrichment, community service, health, and physical fitness activities for children ages 6 through 12.
College and Career Preparations
Pulaski County Schools are committed to ensuring that their students are well-equipped for both college and the workforce. Their vision is for every student to be “Transition Ready.” The School to Work/Co-op program allows students to take classes in vocational areas and find work experience in those fields. The Youth Apprenticeship program, run through the Green Bay Chamber of Commerce, offers students the opportunity to take classes at NWTC and gain practical work experience.
Community Engagement
These programs demonstrate the county’s commitment to investing in the future of its youth. Director of Youth Services Jamie Scott believes that providing opportunities for young people to develop these skills is crucial for the community’s long-term prosperity. As County Judge Barry Hyde puts it, “A thriving community is predicted by its economic stability and employment opportunities. A successful community invests in their children’s development so that the community can continue to thrive.”
Summer Workforce and Literacy Programs
The county’s summer programs also reflect this commitment. The Summer Workforce Youth Employment Opportunity provides youth ages 16-21 with meaningful, paid job placements. The Summer Literacy Academy helps youth in grades 1-3 develop their reading comprehension skills.
Vision 2025
Pulaski County Youth Services is working towards a bright future for its young people, with the goal of launching a Career Readiness and Workforce Development afterschool and summer program to provide workforce experiences for youth ages 16-21. This vision for 2025 focuses on career exploration, resume writing workshops, job shadowing opportunities, and cultural enrichment activities.
