Sales Tax Increase in Little Rock Leads to Renovations of Community Centers
As Little Rock prepares to vote on a 1% sales tax increase, proponents are highlighting the positive impact this change could have on community centers and recreational facilities. Currently, Little Rock residents pay an 8.625% sales tax rate, split between state, county, and city revenues. This new tax increase aims to bolster the city’s financial resources for key sectors, including public safety, infrastructure, parks, and economic development.
The proposed tax hike would importantly benefit Parks and Recreation, ensuring that community centers and recreational facilities receive significant investments. Some of the planned projects include improving Hindman Park with additions like mountain bike trails, a disc golf course, and fishing amenities. War Memorial Park is also slated for major changes, transforming into a multipurpose facility with pickleball courts, a splash pad, a restaurant, and a mountain bike downhill area. These projects are contingent on the passage of the sales tax increase in November.
Beyond the parks, the increased funding would support community programming, including enhanced public safety and additional services for seniors. While some residents have expressed concerns about the tax burden, supporters argue that the benefits to the community would be extensive and long-lasting.
