Sendoff for Johnny Cash Statue at Arkansas State Capitol

Johnny Cash Statue Embarks on Journey to Washington

Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston hosted a sendoff for a statue of renowned music artist Johnny Cash at the Arkansas State Capitol. The event, held on Thursday, September 5th, marked the beginning of the statue’s 1,000-mile journey to its new home in Washington, D.C. Secretary Thurston welcomed special guests, including members of the Legislature, Shane Broadway, Chair of the Arkansas National Statuary Hall Steering Committee, artist Kevin Kresse, Cash family members, and more.

Attendees gathered in front of the Capitol to bid farewell to the eight-foot bronze statue sculpted by Little Rock’s Kevin Kresse. The statue depicts Johnny Cash with a guitar slung over his back and a Bible in his hand, capturing the essence of the country music icon. The sendoff ceremony recognized the contributions of everyone involved in this extensive process.

Notably, Dedicated Logistics of Crossett was set to transport the statue, with CEO Allen Riels receiving special thanks for his support. The unveiling ceremony is scheduled for September 24th in Washington, D.C., where the statue will join that of Daisy Bates, a civil rights leader and another Arkansas native, already placed in the U.S. Capitol. This new addition to the Capitol represents Arkansas with pride, honoring the state’s rich cultural heritage.
