UAMS College of Medicine Welcomes 175 Students at Joint White Coat Ceremony in Little Rock, Fayetteville
In a momentous occasion, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine welcomed 175 new medical students to its Little Rock and Fayetteville campuses. The event marked the beginning of their four-year journey as doctors and the responsibility that comes with it.
UAMS College of Medicine is the state’s only medical school, having graduated over 11,000 physicians since 1879. Currently, it has 3,275 students, 890 medical residents and fellows, and five dental residents. The university boasts a diverse array of programs and research institutes, including Level 1 trauma centers, cancer institutes, and more.
The joint White Coat Ceremony, held on August 9, was attended by hundreds of friends, family, and well-wishers. The ceremony was led by prominent speakers, including James Graham, M.D., executive associate dean for academic affairs, who led the Class of 2028 in reciting the medical student oath.
During the ceremony, students donned crisp white coats symbolizing their new roles, with family members or mentors assisting them. Keynote speakers, including Steven Webber, M.D., the new dean of the College of Medicine, and Johnathan Goree, M.D., an associate professor of anesthesiology, offered words of encouragement and wisdom to the incoming students.
UAMS continues to support innovative programs and research, including a pediatric green lab for neurosurgery residents and a collaboration on maternal health research with other Arkansas institutions.
Throughout their studies, the students will have access to a wide range of clinical and research opportunities across UAMS’s various institutes, ensuring they are well-equipped to carry out the mission of improving the lives of those in Arkansas and beyond.
