UAMS Hosts Third Annual Girlology Session for Daughters and Their Caregivers
UAMS is gearing up for its third annual Girlology session, part of the university’s mission to empower younger generations with accurate information about puberty. This unique program brings together girls aged 8-14 with their accompanying parents or caregivers for an educational and engaging experience.
The Girlology sessions, structured to foster effective communication between parents and daughters, involve a variety of topics such as growth and development, bras and bra shopping, personal hygiene and hair management, nutrition and growth, menstruation, self-respect, emotional intelligence, and online safety. These discussions are led by experts from UAMS’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology: Dr. Nirvana Manning, chair and professor; Dr. Laura Hollenbach, associate professor; and Dr. Kathryn Stambough, assistant professor.
Facilitating conversation and understanding is at the heart of Girlology. Dr. Manning emphasizes that such programs can help ease the challenges many girls and their families face during puberty. “With Girlology, we create a safe space where girls and adults receive medically accurate information from physicians. Our goal is to have physicians provide medically accurate information, create a shared experience, and keep the lines of communication open in the future,” Manning notes.
Girlology is not only educational but also practical, as it includes a downloadable activity book to reinforce key concepts and encourage further discussion at home. Attending the Girlology session typically includes a two and a half hour program with a short break during which a light snack is provided. For those who require financial assistance, scholarships are available.
Registration for the upcoming session on September 22, 2024, is available through a Google Form. Interested participants can find more information on the UAMS Health website and can register for the event at the Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute in Little Rock.
Since its inception in August 2022, Girlology has grown significantly, with over 1,000 families attended the sessions. The continued success of this program is a testament to its valuable contributions to the health and well-being of young girls and their families.
