UAMS Utilizes Grant to Introduce Data Science and STEM to Ninth-Graders

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has received a substantial grant to develop a program that teaches high school students the fundamentals of data science and other STEM-related fields. This initiative targets ninth-grade students, considered a pivotal age for fostering interest in these disciplines.

By providing immersive experiences and hands-on activities, the program aims to ignite a passion for STEM and data science careers among these young learners. This effort is crucial given the significant need for a diverse and well-educated workforce in these fields to address the unique challenges facing the health care sector.

The grant will support classroom outreach programs, a 10-day summer camp, community outreach events, and virtual STEM and data science sessions. Students who participate in the summer camp will become STEM ambassadors, designing and leading outreach events in their communities to promote the importance of data science in making informed health decisions. These outreach events will be tailored to address prevalent health concerns in Northwest Arkansas, such as cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes, and immunology and cancer.

In addition to its immediate educational impact, this program also aligns with the broader objectives of UAMS as a health sciences university. UAMS is committed to preparing students for future careers and empowering them to make data-driven choices that impact their health and wellbeing.
