Update: AT&T Network Issues Resolved for 911 Calls in North Little Rock

North Little Rock officials have announced that all 911 service issues related to AT&T network outages have been resolved. This resolution comes after a series of disruptions that affected the city’s 911 call center on multiple occasions this year.

The most recent incident, which occurred on Sunday and Tuesday, was caused by AT&T cellular outages. The disruptions had a significant impact on the North Little Rock 911 emergency call center, where operators couldn’t receive or respond to incoming 911 calls for approximately 30 minutes on Sunday evening.

“There may have been 911 calls that our in-house equipment could not receive,” Gary Gray, Deputy Director of Emergency Services in North Little Rock, explained. “We could see those 911 calls coming in; we just weren’t able to respond to them.”

Despite the inconvenience, city officials promptly addressed the issue. “We simply picked up the line for the caller and informed them we recognized their 911 call and asked how we could assist,” Gray continued.

Christopher Wright, who leads cybersecurity efforts, clarified that the outages were not due to security vulnerabilities but rather a software malfunction. He noted that these companies often operate with minimal staffing, leaving just one or two individuals accountable for these issues, who are frequently overwhelmed with their workload.

While these outages can originate from a national scale, their repercussions are felt at the community level, particularly impacting call centers. In this instance, North Little Rock residents were advised to contact an alternative number if they experienced difficulties reaching 911 due to the outage.

Previous Incidents and Resolutions

This incident marks the third or fourth time this year that North Little Rock’s 911 call center has experienced issues related to AT&T outages. Each time, the disruptions have caused similar impacts on emergency response services.

As part of the settlement with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regarding an investigation into potential violations of FCC regulations, AT&T has committed to implementing a three-year strategy to ensure adherence to the FCC’s 911 and outage notification regulations.

Regional Impact of Outages

The AT&T outage not only affected North Little Rock but also impacted other communities across the country. Cities like Charlotte, Los Angeles, Houston, and New York City reported significant spikes in outage reports, highlighting the diverse geographic spread of these issues.

Government agencies nationwide have noted the potential impact of such outages on residents’ ability to reach 911 services. For example, in Hawkins County, Tennessee, the local 911 agency warned that the outage could affect some residents’ ability to reach their 911 center, advising them to use non-emergency lines if needed.
