Bentonville Officer Cleared in Man’s Shooting
On September 9, 2024, the 19th Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney cleared Bentonville Police Officer Omri-Andrew Nutt of any wrongdoing in a fatal shooting incident that occurred on July 11, 2024. Officer Nutt responded to a 911 call in the Stoneburrow neighborhood, where 37-year-old Nathaniel Mark Crabtree had allegedly assaulted two women outside their homes on Southwest Castlewood Street.
When Nutt arrived, Crabtree refused to comply with his commands to get on the ground. Nutt deployed his stun gun, but it seemed to have no effect. Crabtree continued to approach Nutt, who then fired a single gunshot. Crabtree was transported to a nearby hospital, where he eventually died.
Circumstances Surrounding the Shooting
Crabtree was seen running at a woman and kicking her in the chest. Additionally, a man reported that Crabtree had hit another woman in the back with a concrete block. The 911 dispatcher informed Nutt that Crabtree might be armed. Nutt recognized Crabtree due to the clothing description provided.
The interaction between Nutt and Crabtree was marked by heightened tensions. Crabtree approached Nutt’s patrol car with a clenched fist and did not comply with instructions. Nutt initially backpedaled to create distance but eventually deployed his stun gun. After the stun gun failed to stop Crabtree, Nutt fired the shot that led to his death.
Investigation and Decision
The Arkansas State Police conducted the investigation and turned over the findings to Benton County Prosecuting Attorney Josh Robinson. After careful deliberation, Robinson determined that Nutt’s use of force was justified under Arkansas State law, clearing him of any wrongdoing.
- Officer Nutt has since been reinstated by the Bentonville Police Department.
- The case is considered tragic, with the loss of life being a difficult outcome.
Nutt’s actions were found to be in line with state protocol, and the prosecution chose not to press charges against him.
