New Fayetteville Nonprofit Supports Students with Dyslexia

On August 27, 2024, the Nelms Dyslexia Center officially opened its doors in Fayetteville, Arkansas, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to support individuals affected by dyslexia. This new nonprofit endeavor, spearheaded by the Don and Millie Nelms Foundation, brings much-needed resources to the community.

At the heart of the Center lies the vision of Don Nelms, a successful businessman who struggled with dyslexia throughout his youth. Recognizing the challenges faced by those with dyslexia, the Foundation aims to create a haven where students, families, and educators can access comprehensive support. The denial that Don faced, which led him to find solace in his father’s automobile repair shop, served as a calling to create this safe and nurturing environment.

The facilites at the Nelms Dyslexia Center are designed to provide a holistic experience. They include:

  • Dyslexia assessments: Conducted by Certified Academic Language Therapists, these assessments help identify specific areas of difficulty and guide targeted interventions.
  • Reading therapy: This multisensory structured language approach utilizes research-based instructional strategies to address phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
  • Teacher training: Educators will benefit from extensive training on dyslexia and evidence-based instructional methods to foster a culture of understanding and inclusivity in schools.
  • Information for families: The Center serves as a hub for families, providing resources, guidance, and support.
