Cyber Attack at Northwest Arkansas Community College Prompts Delay in Fall Semester
Northwest Arkansas Community College (NWACC) pushed back the start of its fall semester following a ransomware cyber attack detected on July 30. The attack led to an international shutdown of the college’s technical network, forcing administrators to reschedule the start of classes from August 19 to August 26.
This delay affects various programs, including health professions and apprenticeship programs, which are set to begin on August 19. The cyber attack has caused significant disruptions to the college’s operations, compelling it to take immediate action to safeguard its data and protect student and staff information.
Experts in cybersecurity have weighed in on the attack, highlighting the critical need for institutions like NWACC to engage security professionals to assess vulnerabilities and develop robust protection mechanisms. According to Tom Kirkham, CEO of Kirkham IronTech, these sophisticated attacks often involve encrypting private data and extorting payment in exchange for recovery access. The college’s data is currently backed up in the cloud, and officials are working with the FBI to investigate the attack and restore operations as soon as possible.
Students, such as those in the accelerated nursing program, have been affected by the shutdown.
