Safety a Priority for Sorority Rush Week at University of Arkansas
Sorority Rush Week at the University of Arkansas kicked off on August 9, 2024, with Recruitment Orientation, marking the beginning of a week-long journey for Potential New Members (PNMs). The process, which will conclude on August 17 with Bid Day, has many rules and guidelines in place to ensure the safety and comfort of all participants.
One key aspect of the safety measures is the role of Rho Gammas and Gamma Chis. These are recruitment counselors who have temporarily disaffiliated from their sororities to guide and support the PNMs throughout the process. They play a vital role in creating a welcoming and informative environment for the PNMs.
The university has also emphasized the importance of maintaining a “dry week,” prohibiting drinking and parties during Recruitment Week. This measure aims to keep the focus on the PNMs’ experiences and connections with the sororities rather than socializing unrelated to recruitment.
Additionally, the university has outlined specific attire guidelines for PNMs to ensure they are comfortable while visiting the different sorority chapters. PNMs are encouraged to wear comfortable bottoms and school-issued Panhellenic T-shirts on Day 1, with personal style encouraged through accessories.
The Five B’s, which stand for Boys, Ballots, Booze, Bible, and Bucks, are also explicitly listed as topics to avoid during conversations. These sensitive subjects could lead to discomfort or inappropriate discussions, so it is essential to steer clear of them.
Furthermore, the university requires a cumulative GPA of 2.5 for all women planning to go through Formal Recruitment, ensuring that academic standards are maintained. Transfer students with less than a 2.5 GPA must complete 12 hours of university-level coursework with a 2.5 GPA to participate in recruitment.
Throughout the recruitment process, PNMs are prohibited from using cell phones during parties, and any phones found will be taken and returned at the end of the day. This rule aims to minimize distractions and promote genuine interactions between the PNMs and sorority members.
Lastly, the university emphasizes the importance of honesty and authenticity during the recruitment process. PNMs are discouraged from faking their interests or trying to sabotage conversations with sororities they do not favor, as this can lead to negative consequences and a poor overall experience.
