Woman Accused of Threatening to Kill Two People in Pea Ridge

Jury Seeks Death Penalty for Woman Accused of Killing Pea Ridge Police Officer

Shawna Cash, a 25-year-old woman from Pine Bluff, is currently standing trial for the capital murder of Pea Ridge Police Officer Kevin Apple. The incident occurred in June 2021, where Cash allegedly hit and killed Officer Apple with her car at a gas station. Alongside capital murder, Cash is also charged with fleeing, two counts of aggravated assault, and obstructing governmental operations.

The trial, which began on February 5, 2024, has seen the jury find Cash guilty of the crime. Currently, the sentencing phase is underway, where the jury is considering whether to impose the death penalty for the heinous crime.

The trial process has been closely monitored by law enforcement officers, with many attending the proceedings. This has raised concerns about potential intimidation of witnesses. Judge Brad Karren has vowed to address these concerns on a case-by-case basis to ensure a fair trial.

The defense has also raised concerns about the prosecution’s power to subpoena witnesses testifying on mitigating factors that could impact sentencing. They argue that this might cause a chilling effect on witness testimony. Despite these challenges, the trial continues, and a verdict on the death penalty is awaited.

The community remains shocked and saddened by the loss of Officer Apple, and justice for his family and loved ones is the primary focus of the trial.
