Commissioners reject plan for downtown student-focused housing complex, decision to go to City Council on appeal
The Fayetteville Planning Commission recently rejected plans for a student housing complex that would accommodate 676 students due to concerns about an off-site parking arrangement. Developers proposed leasing the former Powerhouse property for 55 years to provide 439 required parking spaces, but this idea did not receive sufficient support from commissioners. Commissioner Jimm Garlock raised issues about the longevity of the lease, reflecting a broader apprehension about dedicating land to passive parking use. The project’s fate is now in the hands of the City Council as stakeholders seek a viable solution for student housing that aligns with the city’s development goals.
