MICHIGAN CITY, IN — Police in Michigan City are investigating an overnight shooting near the city’s senior center that left two people wounded and one person in custody. Officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim near the Michigan City Senior Center and began giving aid before emergency medical crews arrived.
During that response, investigators learned that a second person with a gunshot wound had gone to Franciscan Hospital. As of Sunday night, police said no charges had been filed. Authorities also said the situation appeared to be limited to the people involved and that there was no ongoing danger to the public.
Officers gave first aid before EMS arrived at the scene
Michigan City Police said the first emergency call sent officers to the area near the senior center after someone reported a gunshot victim. The officers provided immediate assistance while waiting for EMS to take over medical care.
That quick response became part of the early investigation, which is still active. Police have not said where exactly the shooting happened in relation to the senior center, and they have not released information about the conditions of the injured people.
What is clear is that the scene drew a multi-agency response as officers worked to sort out what happened and who was involved.
Second victim reached Franciscan Hospital during the investigation
While officers were on scene, they learned that another wounded person had arrived at Franciscan Hospital with a gunshot injury. Police did not say whether that person got to the hospital on their own or was brought in by someone else.
The discovery of a second victim changed the scope of the case from a single emergency call to a broader shooting investigation. Even so, police said the incident still appears to have involved only the people directly connected to it.
No additional details were released about the victims’ identities, ages or relationships to one another.
One person remained in custody as investigators reviewed what happened
Police said one person was in custody by Sunday night, but no charges had been filed at that point. Investigators did not identify the person being held or explain what role that individual may have played in the shooting.
Authorities also said it remains unclear what led up to the gunfire. That missing piece is still central to the case, and police have not publicly described any argument, dispute or other trigger.
The investigation remains open, and Michigan City Police said they will release more information when it is appropriate.
Police say the shooting appears isolated and there is no ongoing threat
In their public statement, Michigan City Police described the shooting as appearing to be an isolated incident between the people involved. They said there is no ongoing threat to the public, a message meant to reassure residents after the overnight violence.
That assessment suggests investigators do not believe the shooting was random or tied to a wider danger in the area. Still, police have not said whether the people involved knew each other or what kind of interaction preceded the shots.
For now, the department is treating the case as a targeted event while it continues to collect information.
County and nearby police departments helped with the case
The Michigan City Police Department did not handle the response alone. The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Long Beach Police Department and Trail Creek Police Department all assisted in the investigation.
That kind of cooperation can help police gather statements, process the scene and piece together the movement of people involved in a fast-developing incident. Officials have not detailed which agency is handling which part of the inquiry.
For residents near the senior center, the main immediate concern appears to be safety, and police have said they do not believe there is a broader threat. Additional updates are expected as investigators continue their work.
