BALDWIN COUNTY, GA — A 42-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday morning after a crash at a South Georgia intersection sent a small SUV into flames, according to the Baldwin County coroner and the Georgia State Patrol. The collision happened around 9:44 a.m. at Gordon Highway and Gordon Avenue.
Investigators said the motorcycle struck a 2015 GMC Terrain after the SUV moved into its path while making a left turn. The rider, identified as James Van Murphy of Gordon, died at the scene from blunt force injuries.
The SUV driver, a 66-year-old, was hurt but survived and was taken to the VA Medical Center in Macon.
Georgia State Patrol says SUV was turning left onto Gordon Highway
Georgia State Patrol said the GMC Terrain was trying to turn left from Gordon Avenue onto Gordon Highway when the crash occurred. That maneuver put the SUV directly in front of the eastbound motorcycle, a 2000 Kawasaki EN500, officials said.
The impact caused Murphy to be thrown from the motorcycle. Coroner Julie Marchman said he died on impact. The coroner also said the scene involved a fire after the collision, with the SUV catching fire following the wreck.
No further details were released about the extent of the vehicle damage, and officials have not said what caused the fire to spread so quickly after the crash.
Victim identified as 42-year-old James Van Murphy of Gordon
Marchman identified the motorcyclist as James Van Murphy, 42, of Gordon. She said he suffered several blunt force injuries in the collision.
Murphy’s death happened close to home, as did the location of the crash for the SUV driver, Marchman said. She added that both people were near their residences when the crash happened.
The coroner said the situation was another reminder that drivers should pay closer attention to motorcycles on the road. Motorcyclists have less protection than people in enclosed vehicles, making left-turn crashes especially dangerous.
SUV driver taken to Macon hospital with minor injuries
The 66-year-old driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries, according to Marchman. Emergency personnel transported the driver to the VA Medical Center in Macon, where the coroner said the person is expected to be okay.
Officials did not release the driver’s name. They also did not say whether the driver was a local resident, beyond Marchman’s comment that the crash occurred near both drivers’ homes.
The State Patrol said the driver survived the wreck despite the fire and the force of the impact. No additional medical information was provided.
Charges remain pending as investigators review the collision
Georgia State Patrol said charges are currently pending. Investigators have not announced whether any citations or criminal charges will be filed, and they did not provide a timeline for that decision.
Crashes involving left turns and motorcycles are a recurring concern because drivers can misjudge distance or fail to see an oncoming bike in time. In this case, officials said the SUV drove into the motorcycle’s path, leading to the fatal impact.
Authorities have not said whether road conditions, speed, or visibility played a role. For now, the case remains under review by state troopers.
Crash happened at Gordon Highway and Gordon Avenue shortly after 9:40 a.m.
The collision took place at the intersection of Gordon Highway and Gordon Avenue, a crossing that officials pinpointed as the scene of the wreck. The crash time, 9:44 a.m., places the incident in the late morning, when traffic may already have been building.
After the impact, the SUV caught fire, adding another layer of danger to the scene. The account from investigators and the coroner indicates that the motorcycle rider was killed instantly, while the SUV driver was able to get medical help.
WGXA reported the details based on statements from Deputy Coroner Julie Marchman and the Georgia State Patrol.
