KANSAS CITY, MO — An Olathe woman died Monday morning after a single-vehicle crash on the northbound ramp of Interstate 35 at 75th Street in Kansas City. The Kansas Highway Patrol said emergency crews were called around 10 a.m. to the ramp, where a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban struck a guardrail.
The driver, Angela M. Carter, was 52. Troopers said the SUV kept moving after the impact, crossed the 75th Street intersection, hit several raised medians and ended in a ditch. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene.
Kansas Highway Patrol identifies the driver as Angela M. Carter, 52
The Kansas Highway Patrol identified the driver as Angela M. Carter of Olathe. She was behind the wheel of a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban when the crash happened Monday morning. Officials did not immediately release any information about passengers, and the highway patrol described the wreck as a single-vehicle crash.
Single-vehicle collisions can unfold quickly when a driver leaves the roadway or hits fixed objects such as guardrails and medians. In this case, troopers said the Suburban struck the guardrail on the ramp before continuing across the nearby intersection. Carter died from the crash at the scene.
SUV crossed 75th Street after hitting the ramp guardrail
According to troopers, the crash began on the northbound ramp of I-35 at 75th Street. After striking the guardrail, the Suburban traveled across the 75th Street intersection, hit several raised medians and then came to rest in a ditch. The sequence suggests the vehicle moved through a busy interchange area rather than stopping at the point of impact.
The intersection and ramp area connect a major interstate with a heavily traveled local road, making the location a complicated place for drivers and emergency responders. The highway patrol did not say whether weather, speed or a medical issue contributed to the crash.
Emergency crews were called just before 10 a.m.
Emergency responders were dispatched around 10 a.m. Monday. The Kansas Highway Patrol said crews were called to the northbound ramp shortly after the crash, and Carter was declared dead at the scene. No additional injuries were mentioned in the initial information released by troopers.
Officials have not said whether the crash forced lane closures or affected traffic on I-35 or 75th Street. The location is part of a busy corridor in Johnson County, where interstate ramps and city streets meet in close proximity. Troopers continued their work at the scene after the fatal wreck.
No cause has been released as investigators continue their work
The Kansas Highway Patrol said an investigation is underway. Investigators have not released a possible cause of the crash, and they have not said whether distraction, mechanical problems or another factor may have played a role. The agency also has not announced any citations or charges connected to the wreck.
Fatal crashes on ramps can be especially difficult to reconstruct because the vehicle path may include a guardrail strike, roadway crossing and secondary impacts, as happened here. Officials typically examine the damage to the vehicle, the roadway and nearby barriers before reaching conclusions about what occurred.
Fatal crash adds to the dangers of interchange ramps in Johnson County
The wreck happened in a high-traffic area where a major interstate feeds into a city street. Ramps and medians can leave little room for error, and even a brief loss of control can send a vehicle into fixed objects or across multiple lanes of traffic. Troopers said Carter’s Suburban hit the guardrail, crossed the intersection and landed in a ditch.
For now, the highway patrol’s account provides the basic outline of the fatal collision but few details beyond the vehicle path and the victim’s identity. Carter’s death leaves investigators to determine why the Suburban left its line of travel and whether anything inside the vehicle or on the roadway contributed to the crash.
