KANSAS CITY, MO — A passenger has died several days after a rollover crash in which a box van caught fire in Kansas City, according to police. Officers and emergency crews responded to the wreck on Tuesday, Sept. 29, near Missouri Route 350 and Blue Parkway.
Kansas City police said the van’s two occupants were seriously injured and initially reported to be in stable condition. On Monday, Oct. 5, police were notified that the passenger had died from injuries suffered in the crash.
Police say the box van drifted off the road before overturning
Investigators believe a 1985 Chevrolet box van was heading west when the driver was unable to make a curve. Police said the vehicle then left the right side of the roadway and flipped over.
After the rollover, the van became engulfed in flames. Police have not said how quickly fire crews were able to reach the vehicle or whether any other cars were involved.
The preliminary findings point to a single-vehicle crash, but the investigation remains open. Authorities have not released additional details about the driver’s condition beyond the earlier report that the driver was seriously hurt.
Emergency crews responded to the Route 350 and Blue Parkway area
Fire and police personnel were called to the scene after reports of a crash in the area of Missouri Route 350 and Blue Parkway. That intersection sits in a busy part of Kansas City where major roads carry steady traffic.
The response followed the van’s rollover and fire, which made the crash more severe than a typical roadway accident. Police said both people inside the vehicle were injured badly enough to require immediate attention.
Officials did not say how many units responded, but the wreck drew both emergency crews and Kansas City police officers to the scene.
Both occupants were seriously hurt before the passenger later died
At first, police said the driver and passenger were both seriously injured but stable. That assessment changed days later when investigators learned the passenger had died from those injuries.
Police did not identify the passenger publicly in the information released about the crash. They also did not provide an age for either occupant.
The update came nearly a week after the collision, showing that the effects of the blaze and rollover were severe enough to prove fatal after the initial emergency response.
The crash remains under investigation by Kansas City police
Kansas City police continue to investigate what led up to the wreck and the fire that followed. So far, the preliminary review has focused on the van failing to stay on the curve and leaving the roadway.
Authorities have not announced whether speed, road conditions, or any mechanical problem may have played a role. No additional vehicles have been linked to the crash in the information released so far.
Because the case is still active, police have not offered a final determination on the cause. Further findings could come after investigators complete their review of the scene and circumstances.
A fatal turn after an initially survivable crash scene
The sequence of events turned a serious crash into a fatal one over several days. What began as a rollover with two survivors in stable condition ended with the death of the passenger on Oct. 5.
For investigators, the crash now joins the broader record of serious traffic incidents in Kansas City that involve road departures and vehicle fires. For the people inside the van, the impact was immediate and lasting.
Police have not said whether either occupant was trapped in the vehicle or whether the fire began right away after the rollover. Those details have not been released as the investigation continues.
