Emergency responders at a crash scene on Interstate 75 near the Hartley Bridge Road exit

MACON, GA — A 50-year-old woman died Thursday afternoon after her Ford F-150 struck the rear of a Freightliner trailer on Interstate 75 South just before the Hartley Bridge Road exit, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened around 1:06 p.m. and briefly shut down all southbound lanes while emergency crews responded. Investigators said the pickup was traveling south when the driver braked for traffic ahead, but was unable to stop in time.

No other injuries were reported.

Deputies say the pickup could not stop in time

Deputies identified the vehicles as a 2019 Ford F-150 and a 2023 Freightliner Cascadia. The sheriff’s office said the pickup collided with the back of the trailer in front of it after the driver tried to slow down for traffic.

The wreck happened on a busy stretch of Interstate 75 near one of Macon’s major exits. Authorities have not said whether road conditions, speed, or any other factor may have contributed to the collision.

The crash remains under active investigation by Bibb County deputies.

Fire crews could not free the trapped driver

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department responded to the scene, but deputies said firefighters were unable to remove the driver from the pickup after she became trapped inside the vehicle.

Paramedics then took her to a local medical facility for treatment. Coroner Leon Jones said she was later pronounced dead at 1:53 p.m. from blunt force trauma.

Officials did not release her name.

Traffic was blocked while investigators worked the scene

All southbound lanes on I-75 were closed after the crash, causing a temporary shutdown of traffic in the area. Bibb County officials later said the roadway reopened after the scene was cleared.

The closure came during the afternoon travel period, when drivers on the interstate were forced to find other ways around the crash site. Authorities did not say how long the lanes remained blocked.

By later in the day, normal traffic flow had resumed.

Officials have not said what caused the deadly collision

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is still open, and it has asked anyone with information to contact its fatality investigator at 478-751-7500. That number goes to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

For now, investigators have confirmed only the sequence of events leading up to the crash: the woman was driving south, tried to stop for traffic ahead, and struck the Freightliner trailer.

Authorities have not announced any charges or cited any mechanical failure, weather issue, or roadway defect.

Deadly wreck adds to a difficult year on Bibb County roads

The fatal collision unfolded as Bibb County officials continue to track serious violence and crashes across the area. The sheriff’s office said this case is separate from other public safety issues and remains focused on the circumstances of Thursday’s wreck.

For drivers, the crash is another reminder of how quickly traffic on Interstate 75 can come to a stop and turn dangerous. Even a brief delay in braking can have fatal consequences when vehicles are moving at highway speed.

Deputies have urged anyone with knowledge of the crash to come forward while the investigation continues.
